Windy City

It’s been awhile, last weekend I went on a little midwestern road trip…

Land of Lincoln

Tom bought this car for $750 on ebay. It was in Chicago, his plan – we fly out there, stay the weekend with an old friend, Brian LeBaron, and drive the 62 Buick Special the 800 miles to Philadelphia. Even in the “blackout of ’03″ my plane left on time, smaller airports is the way to go – the large NY ones were backed up for hours… I recommend McArthur, on Long Island.

It was in pretty rough shape, and handled like it only had 2 wheels; The short ride from just outside Chicago back to Brians pad was terrifying. The tires look original and could easily be put on a 10 speed bicycle (they were super thin).

Super dope pink interior. Speedometer didn’t work, neither did reverse.

Lebaron still eats mad cheerios and drinks way too much mountain dew; we hadn’t seen him in almost 6 years. Now a game designer for midway; If you enter in “GRINCH 0222″ in NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC you can actually add Lebaron to your team.

We went out to a spot called Hogs & Honeys, a local Coyote Ugly style bar, they seem to be all the rage right now, complete w/ mechanical bull; and chicks dancing on the bar. Similar to the Irish car bomb, the Chicago drink is a large shot of yager droppped in a red bull, and chugged. We were wired instantly.

We ended up at a place called Exit, basically a goth hang out complete with a caged dance floor, I got yelled at for taking photos.

Brian & his woman…

After some minor adjustments to the ride, we took off Sunday afternoon.

With a ton of ground to cover, at dusk we discovered that the alternator wasn’t functioning properly, as the headlights drained the battery in about 10 minutes. To make it to the next rest stop just outside of Toledo Ohio, we had to drive 23 miles without the lights on. We spent the night in the parking lot, and hit the road again at sunrise. These old school rides only use a battery for starting it up, and then the headlights. We figured we had about 12 hours of daylight to make it back to Philly.

Despite the fact that we had to get out and push in lieu of reverse; the rest of the ride went a smooth 60 mph, getting passed by every other person on the road. Nice ride, tons of fun, and my right arm got a nice tan.
