Flickr photos as comments, a practical use May 23, 2005 5 comments

We’re trying out the latest version of Foxxyz’ Flickr Photo Comments plugin on the éS blog in a post titled “photo mixup: Scuba Steve“. Kids can edit a photo and upload it to their Flickr accounts, tagged with (the combination of) specific words. Each photo will then appear as a comment, automagically.

The latest version of the plugin even checks to see if the photo is no longer availble on Flickr, and if it isn’t, changes the comments’ status from ‘approved’ to ‘moderated’ within wordpress. This way the comments will moderate themselves, to some degree. In the future, it’d be nice to download the photos and host them ourselves.

    Nice!
The main thing I don’t like about the Flickr solutions to anything is that they are hosted and linked to Flickr… everytime you click one- Boom- you leave the chossen site and are directed to Flickr… after a while you give up on going back to the original site. Sometimes hosting tem yourself is a better solution.

The tag relationship, and all the great plug ins coming out for it is hot though.

    cpawl,
A link to Flickr isn’t required for any plugin. I, for one, always like to see a photo in more detail, and Flickr provides good services and functionality for that.

On the other hand, when Flickr is down, or out of service, then so is your nice plugin.

    Oh well.

    Of course-
I know it is not “required” but its there most of the time. And you hit the nail on the with “when Flickr is down, service is out” theory. A good example is that the “Scuba Steve” seems to be loading extra special slow today. Wonder why? The code is clean…

It a neat-o trick, but I see it as more of a gimmick rather than anything else. Whatever- it’s fun I suppose.

A large purpose was to get kids more involved with the blog, something a little more thought out than just straight commenting. The rest of the sites promote skateboarding, we wanted to promote internet use too! Plus that whole creative aspect of the users making art & what not.

Don’t get me wrong, my grumpy inpressions mean nothing anyway… it’s a hot site (although I do get sick at looking at the big pic of dude).

    good skills ^
