There are a couple of key CSS selectors that if Internet Explorer Seven supported, would bolster the case for dropping support of Internet Explorer Six. As long as IE 7 ignores these, web developers are still forced to create workarounds. These workarounds can also be used in IE 6, so we’re basically making support for IE 6 a bit easier.

Is this something Microsoft thought of to encourage developers to hold on to 6, or are they still just a bit behind with CSS support?

While choosing what browsers to support will always be about market share, the better a new browser is, the quicker that browser will be embraced by the web development community, and the quicker it’s market share will rise.

There’s certainly more, but here’s a couple of key CSS selectors I’ve come across recently, that IE 7 still does not support:

  • :first-child
  • ul + ul
