A few words I learned (can I say the words were learned, if they’ll likely soon be forgotten?) or liked in The Birthday Party:

rapacious: excessively greedy and grasping; “a rapacious divorcee on the prowl”; “ravening creditors”.
heedless: characterized by careless unconcern.
acquisitive: eager to acquire and possess things especially material possessions or ideas; “an acquisitive mind”.
antithetical: sharply contrasted in character or purpose; “practices entirely antithetical to her professed beliefs”.
nadir: The lowest point.
