Link multiple block elements January 23, 2006 2 comments

There’s really no way to put a link around a bunch of block level elements, is there?

To achieve something like:

<div>

<a href=”#”>

<h2>poop</h2>

<h3>poop</h3>

<h4>poop</h4>

</a>

</div>

You need to write:

<div>

<h2><a href=”#”>poop</a></h2>

<h3><a href=”#”>poop</a></h3>

<h4><a href=”#”>poop</a></h4>

</div>

Which is fine, except when you want to treat that entire div as it’s own link.

Sure, you can give the illusion that all of your block level elements share a single link with some simple css:

div:hover h2 a,div:hover h3 a, div:hover h4 a {color:#000;}

Get it? When you hover over the div, all of it’s contained block level elements will appear to be in a hover state as well. This of course creates new problems, the biggest being, the space around your headings appears to be clickable, when it’s not.

Is there a better way to accomplish this?

The method mentioned above is currently in use on the right side of emerica’s home page. The :hover pseudo selector in Internet Explorer is only supported on anchor tags, so the method doesn’t work for the majority of users.

Awhile back, I tried to do a sketch-a-day site, uploading a new sketch, you guessed it - every day. It lasted about 30 days.

I thought this time I’d try something a little different and only put up “finished” pieces of art, or as I prefer to call it - fart. Then I’d blatently ask for your money. Believe it or not, 2 of them have already sold! I’m sitting on a cool $45 cause of it! Now it’s your turn to spend your money. Extremely low offers are encouraged!

There’s a couple of entries in there that aren’t things for sale, I’m still working out the format a bit, read sweaterbox - WTF if you’re really that interested.

Goofy Vs. Regular July 7, 2005 6 comments

We launched a site for an upcoming contest called Goofy Vs. Regular. What do you think? Vote for goofy when you get there.

Update- You might see this posted on (the recently un-designed) Hot Crew:

Another showdown between Goofy & Regular. We loaded this one up w/ activities for the kids and technology for the nerds. Watch Goofy & Regular riders battle it out right on the site by selecting who you think will win (as of this post, I’m happy to point out that Goofy leads with 53% of the vote). Lay down the smack on each & every rider with your gravatar lighting up the comments. Then our personal favorite, rate your rider on a scale of 1-10 to watch those weighted lists grow & shrink! A visual representation of who you, the user, thinks will dominate the contest.

Mozilla released firefox, Deer Park Alpha 1 with a slew of support for the latest & greatest.

What Web dev features in Deer Park Alpha 1 are you looking most forward to?

Some portions that I look forward to include, but are not limited to:

  1. The outline property - “Outlines may be non-rectangular” - how sweet is that?
  2. Multi-column layout - (of course, we all want this)
  3. (continued) Support of basic css3 selectors
  4. overflow-x and overflow-y properties

Unfortunately, as we continue to develop for IE on both the mac & pc, these techniques will continue to go unused. Who else wants a simple input[type="radio"] to work cross-browser? In preperation for the day these sweet joints can be utilized freely, let’s celebrate and declare classes that cleary overwrite our css3 selectors!!

Are you using the Deer Park release of Firefox yet? Have you read through the latest supported features? What’s YOUR future favorites?

Changing font sizes May 26, 2005 9 comments

Is it pointless to add “make this text bigger/smaller” buttons on a site that is using the very scaleble eM unit of measure? Do you think users ever increase their font size? If they do, would they be more likely to do it through their browser, or a by clicking a button provided by the site creators? Do you have any examples of where you’ve seen scalable text that you liked/didn’t like? I’d love to hear from you.

Skatenerd sent over this desktop. Download it & use it. They have it in tif and I switched it to jpg.

And it looks like there’s some progress on the Schuylkill River skatepark. Unfortunatley for former Park Towne Residents such as myslef, it’s 5 years too late (Apartments right next to park site). But of course, never to late for Philly.

If anyone else has pics from the event, add your links to the comments, or send me a URL and I’ll post em here. Bill at ghettocooler dot net.

A skateboard, a fish tank, and a drawn blank September 16, 2004 6 comments

Skatenerds upcoming art show, Endless Summer, is next Friday and I’m hurting for ideas. What I do have are these two items (at Metal’s suggestion).

A skateboard:

skateboard

And a Macintosh Plus, fish tank:

Mac Plus tank

So far, here’s what my creative mind has come up with:

skatetank, final product

I need some input, hit up those comments. Just so you know, This is a functioning fish tank, so it will in fact contain a live fish.
